Python enforces a strict argument order: positional args, then *args, then keyword-only args (after *), then **kwargs. def f(a, b, *args, key=None, **kwargs) is valid: a and b are positional, *args collects extra positional args, key=None is keyword-only (can only be passed by name), **kwargs catches remaining keyword args. **kwargs can never be followed by anything - it must come last. *args can never follow **kwargs.
