The simple CASE form (CASE expression WHEN value THEN ...) compares using equality only - you cannot use >, <, >=, LIKE, or BETWEEN in the WHEN clause. For range comparisons or any predicate beyond equality, you must use the searched CASE form (CASE WHEN condition THEN ...). Trying to write CASE score WHEN >= 90 is a syntax error in every major SQL dialect.
