IS NULL finds rows where the date column has no value. This is the standard way to find incomplete or open tasks - those without a completion date. WHERE completed_at = NULL would return 0 rows because = NULL is UNKNOWN, not TRUE. IS NOT NULL finds the opposite: tasks that have been completed.
