UNIQUE enforces that every value in the column appears at most once - but NULL is treated specially. Most databases allow multiple NULL values in a UNIQUE column because NULL is unknown, so two NULLs are not considered equal. Unlike PRIMARY KEY, a table can have multiple UNIQUE constraints, and UNIQUE columns are allowed to be NULL.
