Catching a custom exception by its parent type

DatabaseError inherits from AppError, which inherits from Exception. Python's except clause matches any subclass of the specified type. So except AppError catches DatabaseError instances too. This is the main reason to build exception hierarchies - you can catch a whole family of related errors with one clause, or be specific and catch only a subtype.
